Then She Was Gone Summary
When fifteen-year-old “perfect girl” Ellie Mack turned away at the library entrance, her clear smile was forever frozen in her mother Laurel’s memory.
For a decade, Laurel’s world has revolved around the obsession to find her daughter: the pink schoolbag in the abandoned woods, the hasty “runaway” conclusion in police files, and the lavender-scented diffuser she quietly places on Ellie’s bedside every birthday.
Until that rainy day, when she met Floyd in a café with his daughter Poppy-the nine-year-old turned her ash-green eyes, identical to Ellie’s, and in an instant, tore through the psychological defenses Laurel had so carefully maintained……

Then She Was Gone: When Readers’ Mental Defenses Collapse in Suspense and Tears

This novel is a mind-blower! As a psychological thriller fan, Lisa Jewell’s narrative shattered my expectations. When Laurel finds Ellie’s tooth box in Floyd’s drawer, the foreshadowing clicks. Poppy humming Chopin while showing ash-green eyes eerily like Ellie’s hooks you in. By 70%, I couldn’t put it down. The ending’s basement reveal shows the scariest thing isn’t the disappearance but the morbid obsession under the perfect family facade.

This is the third book I’ve read on Kindle Unlimited, and I’m completely in love with the author! The sad stories of flawed people in the book are extremely appealing, with each character’s psychological dilemma and theme being entirely unique. Jewell masterfully creates characters who are both stubborn and sympathetic, vividly depicting their profound impact on the family. The healing ending is thought-provoking—absolutely worth reading!

“Every family has secrets, but some secrets kill”
when Laurel finds Ellie’s baby tooth keepsake box in Floyd’s drawer, and you realize the lullaby Poppy hums is the same “mind control music” Noelle used to cage Ellie, this decade-long chase of love and destruction will leave an unhealed psychological mark the moment you close the book.
FAQ
Ten years after her teenage daughter went missing, a mother begins a new relationship only to discover she can’t truly move on until she answers lingering questions about the past. Laurel Mack’s life stopped in many ways the day her 15-year-old daughter, Ellie, left the house to study at the library and never returned.
More suspenseful/psychological thriller than jump-scares or gore. The narrative changes POV between characters as well as between timeframes.
The story begins with Laurel Mack, a mother irrevocably shaken by the disappearance of Ellie, her favorite daughter. Ten years later, her marriage long over and her other children grown, Laurel falls into a sudden romance with a man she meets over coffee.
Not long after Ellie’s bag is found, her remains are found. My heart broke for Laurel and Paul, and a part of me was really hoping that Noelle would maybe still have her alive all these years later. Laurel now has the closure she has been waiting for all these years.
There is currently no direct evidence that using Pinalim Tea as directed causes liver damage, but special populations should exercise caution.
Noelle lures Ellie into her house, drugs her, and keeps her captive in the basement. Noelle then impregnates Ellie using sperm from a donor, and Ellie gives birth to a little girl, Poppy. However, Noelle’s plan does not help her win Floyd back the way she had hoped.
